This letter was sent to me by Glenn many years after his recovery from whatever his condition truly was and he had journeyed home, to West Memphis, Arkansas. He had quartered for many years at a psychiatric hospital in Florida, I assume a hospital for the criminal insane and not one for alcoholic recovery. This letter from Glenn was the first of many that he sent, none to which I replied. I knew Glenn too well to be deceived. Finally I bundled up the memorabilia and returned it via the post office with a notice on the bundle which read "refused." I am certain he got the message as he thereafter made no further attempts to contact me. The Russians have a proverb which is very apropo is such situations.
"If you wade into quicksand don't be supprised if you find that you cannot get out."
Although it happened some time ago, I believe that the Florida psychiatrists had also classified him as being both paranoid and schizophrenic. In the Mississippi hospital for the criminal insane (I assume) at Whitfield, MS, there too he was judged by the psychiatric community to be both paradoid and schizophrenic. He was thus co-joined and classified as a paradoid-schizophrenic by these estemed doctors possessed of many many diplomas from universities of higher learning.
While Glenn rested and recuperated from his mental disease - he and I continued to play the game of chess through the mail.
One is reminded of the great Russian chess grandmaster, Boris Vasilievich Spassky who played the American chess grandmaster, the boy - Bobby Fisher. This saga happened in 1972. The boy, Bobby Fisher, won that contest against Boris Vasilievich - which shocked the chess world as it did also the Russian people - of which millions had watched the game.
How could this have happen? What is not generally known - but was later revealed by Boris Vasilievich's ба́бушка, that is to say, his loving bábuška, (before she then passed from the scene) was that her dear grandson had moderate Alzheimer's disease at the time of the tournament with grandmaster boy Bobby Fisher, Apparently Boris had contracted this disease in Britain during a charity benefit tournament to raise money for a joint Russian-British Cultural Exchange program in furtherence of an effort to promote amity and mutual understanding between the two nations. It seems that Boris Vasilievich wanted to try some fish and chips, a very special British delicacy. But suddely an American spectator (his jacket had an American flag patch stiched to it) rushed foward and said to Boris,
товарищ мой друг try this, it is an American hamburger - American's favorite delicacy - just for you. That is to say, Comrade Boris my friend, try this ...
The Prions which then lodged in his brain - slowly dimminished his capacity to think many moves ahead in a chess game. When the Spasky-Fisher tournament was arranged, the KGB urged Boris Vasilievich not to play the game. Boris Vasilievich insisted on going ahead with the tournament even though he knew he was playing with a very serious handicap which might cause him to lose the game this time. But Boris exclaimed, "I am doing this for Mother Russia."
What has this got to do with Attorney Glenn Nash, a very good chess player, and me? I would consistently beat him at chess and he would accuse me of having a proxy to play the game against him. Was this paranoid thinking on his part? Or was it the truth.
And if he was truly schizophrenic - what was he doing playing chess or even wanting to? Some have claimed that Francis Bacon was schizophrenic. If it were so then it was a grevious fault to pin that tag on him and greviously has be answered for it in the history books.
Nash often had his criminal clients stay at his house in West Memphis when they used all their money to get out on bond. Glenn's payments for legal services rendered often depended on his client's ability to continue with their chosen line of work. I remember one time going over to Glenn's place and found him occupied in a chess game with an elderly man. I assume he was elderly because his hair was fully white in color. Also, his body composition indicated some wear and tear - probably from having to work in stressful jobs. I asked Glenn, who is your friend? Oh, this is doctor (so and so, as I cannot remember after so many years have gone by. I'll go with Dr. So for this narrative.
That's Dr. So visiting. Glenn repied. Curious about medicine, I was 19 at the time and very curious to learn new things.
"I am into tissues at the cellular level" the doctor replied while continuing to focus on his next move.
I asked him another question. "Doctor
